Mapex MA446SRW Mars Series 4-Piece Rock 24 Shell Pack w/ 24" Bass Drum - Bloodwood

I'm a beginner to intermediate level player. Guitar is my main instrument so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better pack for classic rock at this price. The 24" kick does not have the tom mounting hardware, the pack includes a bracket for mounting the tom on the cymbal stand. This works OK but forces you to put the crash in a specific position to get the toms where they feel natural relative to the snare for fills. For the money it's hard to beat, looks and sounds great. I cut a 6" port in the resonant skin of the kick drum so I could easily install and remove a pillow, and get the mic boom right up inside near the beater to get a nice crack as well as the deep boom that you get from a 24" kick when recording. With SM57s on the kick and snare and a pair of large condenser overheads this kit records really well and has a deep well balanced sound.
